Microplastics Found in Human Olfactory Bulbs

The world’s microplastic problem may be worse than we thought—a new study found microplastics in cadavers’ olfactory bulbs, a potential pathway to deeper brain regions. Researchers detected microplastics like polypropylene and nylon in 8 of 15 samples, though it’s unclear if these particles reach cognitive areas of the brain through the bloodstream. This finding adds to concerns about microplastics’ potential health effects, including inflammation, heart attacks, and neurological diseases.

Hawaiʻi Nurses Locked Out

This past weekend, the Hawaiʻi Nurses Association went ahead with the one-day strike at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children we mentioned last week. And, unfortunately, hospital managers followed through with their promise to lock out the 600 nurses who participated in the strike for safer nurse-to-patient ratios. The hospital says it will continue to do so and fill staff’s roles with travel nurses, unless the union accepts its contract offer “unconditionally”—even if that means nurses lose their health insurance.

New Pandemic Preparedness Research Network

The NIH has launched the ReVAMPP network to develop vaccines and monoclonal antibodies for high-priority pathogens that could cause future pandemics. The network will use its expected $100 million annual budget to study “prototype pathogens” from virus families such as Flaviviridae, Paramyxoviridae, and others. Research centers, including the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the University of California at Irvine, will collaborate and the Research Triangle Institute will coordinate efforts to standardize and share data.
