HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers,

On this day in 2001, the United States experienced the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed 2,977 people and injured thousands more.

Today, we remember the tragic loss of life and the unmatched bravery of the ones who did not hesitate to help. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who were affected by this tragedyโ€ฆand a big thank you to the many heroes that continue to selflessly serve usโ€”and our countryโ€”every day.

Trouble in Paradise

Hawaiสปi Pacific Health has threatened to lock out nurses who are planning a one-day strike on September 13 at the Kapiสปolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oสปahu. With patient workloads a significant concern, the Hawaiสปi Nurses Association is not backing downโ€”it has filed an unfair labor charge, arguing that the lockout punishes employees who exercise their right to protest. The hospitalโ€™s 600 nurses have been working without a new contract since November 2023 and have already held a week-long strike in January.

Missing Nurse Found Dead

The body of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center nurse Melissa Jubane was found after she was reported missing after failing to show up for work last week, leading to a welfare check and subsequent investigation. Jubaneโ€™s neighbor, Bryce Johnathan Schubert, has been arrested and faces second-degree murder charges. Police have not released any details about the case, including where and how Jubaneโ€™s body was recovered or how Schubert may have been involved in her death.

Blind Women in India Aid Cancer Diagnoses

When a person is born without a sense or loses it at an early age, the brain โ€œrewiresโ€ itself to enhance the remaining senses. With this in mind, the global project Discovering Hands has been training blind women in India for years to detect the smallest lumps in a womanโ€™s breast that could be malignant. The initiative has become vital in impoverished areas lacking mammography equipment and instrumental to addressing late breast cancer diagnoses in India.

Debriefing Beyond Critical Incidents

As the scope of occupational trauma changes, so must the way we approach post-traumatic recovery.ย

Enter well-being debriefings. These are informal, peer-facilitated, small group meetings where participants have the opportunity to voice the difficult nature of their work. The intention is to:

  • Decrease distress

  • Reduce burnout

  • Increase social support

  • Decrease feelings of isolation

  • Share lived experiences, tools, and resources

Well-being debriefings are often open topics or general discussions on the emotional impact of work without an agenda and they are beautifully suited for a homogenous group of co-workers such as a department or unit. This is the adaptation of debriefing as an evidence-based holistic healing modality outside of critical incidents.ย
