First Black Nurse in Regular US Armed Forces Dies |
Nancy Leftenant-Colon, the first Black nurse in the regular U.S. armed forces, died at 104 years on January 8. After facing years of racial barriers, Leftenant-Colon was accepted into the Army Reserve in 1945, becoming one of 500 Black nurses serving in WWII. She then joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1948 and served with the Tuskegee Airmen, before becoming a flight nurse with the US Air Force. Retiring as a major in 1965, she later led the Tuskegee Airmen Inc., honoring her service and her brother, a WWII Tuskegee pilot. |

CIA Believes COVID Originated in Lab |
The CIA, with “low confidence,” now believes that the COVID-19 pandemic likely originated from a lab in Wuhan, China, a conclusion relying on existing intelligence and analysis rather than new evidence. Two years ago, the Energy Department came to similar conclusions, again with low confidence. China’s US embassy asks that people “respect science and stay away from conspiracy theories.” This month marks the 5th anniversary of the first confirmed US case, and while many have resumed life as normal, some Americans are still taking precautions seriously. |

Department of Labor Finds Mental Health Ghost Networks |
We previously told you about mental health “ghost networks” that independent investigations discovered. A US Department of Labor report also found evidence of widespread violations of mental health parity laws by insurers, including inadequate networks, denial of essential treatments, and error-prone “ghost networks.” Since 2021, the agency has addressed issues affecting over 7 million people, but faces enforcement challenges due to limited staff and resources, including having just one investigator per every 13,900 plans it regulates. |

Finding Balance in Uncertain Times |
The world feels unsteady, and many of us are navigating uncertainty and change. Whether it’s a shift at work, in your personal life, or in the broader world, adapting can feel overwhelming. But you’re not alone—and there are ways to stay grounded.
First, focus on what’s within your control: tending to yourself, your mindset, and your routines. Creating structure amidst chaos can help you regain balance.
Change can be a call to action. If you have the bandwidth, advocate for what matters to you, no matter how small the steps may seem. If you’re feeling tapped, that’s okay, too. Sometimes, it’s about finding the helpers—those driving positive change—and supporting them however you can.
Lastly, prioritize community. Sharing challenges with trusted friends/colleagues will remind you that you’re supported. By prioritizing rest, connection, and acts of kindness, you’ll find strength amidst the chaos to show up for yourself—and others—in meaningful ways.
Here with you always! |
