Gender Disparities in Pain Treatment

We’re continually learning more about the astounding gender disparities in healthcare, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to improvements. Despite being more sensitive to and more likely to seek help for pain, female-presenting adults often face dismissive attitudes from healthcare providers. They receive less effective treatment, wait longer for care, and are prescribed fewer pain medications. While we’ve learned more about the gender differences in pain over the last two decades, healthcare’s treatment of pain hasn’t shifted, researchers found

Mental Health “Ghost Network”

In early 2023, Ravi Coutinho, battling depression and alcoholism, moved to Phoenix for a fresh start and—critically—psychiatric care. But his insurer, Ambetter, repeatedly failed to provide access to a therapist, trapping him in a “ghost network” of unavailable or irrelevant providers—an all-too-common issue. As Ravi’s mental health worsened, his mother tried to intervene, but Ambetter’s delays persisted. After several hospitalizations and relapses, Ravi was found lodged in a Murphy bed with four empty vodka bottles scattered across the apartment.

MIND Diet for Brain Health

You’ve heard of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, but how about their brain child, the MIND diet? Blending elements from the two diets, the MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet aims to protect against cognitive decline. Researchers recently found that people who closely followed the diet—which contains 10 brain-healthy food groups, such as green leafy vegetables, berries, and seafood—were 4% less likely to develop memory and thinking problems. Additional, more inclusive studies are needed to confirm the findings.

Soft Nursing Won’t Save You

Roles outside of traditional nursing practice are often referred to as soft nursing. They are known to be less physically and emotionally demanding, promote well-being, and cultivate better work-life balance.

However, the term is subjective because how an individual defines the above is deeply personal. Many of the nurses in our debriefing sessions have discovered that soft nursing:

  • Isn’t a quick fix.

  • Has little to do with their role and everything to do with the ability to recover a sense of safety in the aftermath of occupational trauma.

  • Provides the space to begin processing and recovering, but will not save you—only devotion to your healing will.

If you’ve transitioned to a soft nursing role, but still find that limiting beliefs, a sense of urgency, and/or feelings of shame, guilt, unworthiness, or exhaustion remain, consider exploring if debriefing is right for you.
