HUDDLE

Good Morning Readers,

As we wrap up Nurses Month, I wanted to give a huge shoutout to our sponsors, CeraVe, connectRN, and Subway, who have collectively given thousands of dollars worth of gifts to over 100 nurses during Nurses Week. This was our biggest giveaway thus far, with over 2,500 entrants. It’s a huge testament to the community that we are growing and the brands that entrust their organization with us. For those winners that have been contacted, stay tuned, your gifts are loading 🎁.

Noncompete Ban

The Federal Trade Commission’s new rule banning non compete clauses in employment contracts allows healthcare professionals to work freely for any institution or start their own new business after leaving a job without contractual restraintsβ€”as long as their former employer was for-profit. It turns out the rule doesn’t apply to nonprofits, which most healthcare institutions are. The rule may apply to some nonprofit hospitals, but doctors and nurses are advocating to expand it to all healthcare employers.

RN Conflict Resolved

Nurses in Santa Clara County, California, went on a three-day strike in April, as we reported at the time. Nearly two months later, the public hospital nurses have finally reached a deal with the region’s healthcare system management. At issue were disagreements over pay raises, worker safety, and a proposal to float nurses among hospitals. The new deal gives nurses a 15% compounded raise over four years and abandoned the floating nurse proposal.

Get β€˜Em While They’re Young

A dozen elementary students in Hartford, Connecticut, recently celebrated a special kind of graduation. It wasn’t from their elementary schoolβ€”It was from the Mini Nurse Academy created by the National Black Nurses Association. The 9-week program introduces students in grades 3-6 to the nursing profession with three modules: the history of nursing, social determinants of health (including hands-on learning with CPR training and taking blood pressure readings), and creating a research proposal. Check out videos of past classes!

The Importance of a Mentor

Mentors can drive professional growth and open doors for job opportunities.Β

Benefits of a mentor:

  • Gain career guidance from an experienced professional

  • Expand knowledge and develop skillsΒ

  • Grow network connectionsΒ

  • Benefit from peer supportΒ

Finding a mentor can be challenging but not impossible. Follow these tips to find your own nurse mentor:

  • Nurse Association Mentorship Programs: Look for a mentor through a nursing association mentorship program. ANA, ACNL, and ENA have mentorship programs as a free member benefit.Β Β

  • Ask Professional Connections: Have a nurse that you admire in your network? Approach them to see if they would be interested in becoming a mentor. You can do this in person or via email or text.Β

  • Consider a Career Coach: Career coaches provide mentoring services and can work with clients for short or long periods of time. When looking for a career coach, research their experience and expertise to ensure a good fit for your needs.
