Bird Flu is Back |
For only the second time ever in the US, someone has contracted a strain of H5N1 avian influenza. Texas health officials reported the case Monday and say the person is believed to have contracted the virus from dairy cattle, which have a confirmed outbreak of the infection. Fortunately, the personβs only symptom is eye inflammation, and none of their close contacts have shown symptoms. Itβs very rare for this avian flu to be transmitted from person to person.

Hands Off |
New federal guidance now requires hospitals to get explicit patient consent before conducting breast, pelvic, prostate, and rectal exams for training purposes. Without consent, hospitals wonβt receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. Doctors commonly perform these physical exams in sensitive areas on anesthetized patients for the sake of student learningβbut often without consent, STATΒ Β reports. The US Health and Human Services has finally listened to the patients, advocates, and legislators who have pushed for this change for years.

Striking in Silicon Valley |
Nurses in Santa Clara County, California, began a three-day strike Tuesday to protest workplace conditions, wages, and nurse-patient staffing ratios. Itβs the first strike in the history of the Registered Nurses Professional Association union, authorized by a vote in which 97% of members voted to strike. It was expected to affect three South Bay hospitals. Union demands include a 15% wage increase through October 2025 and improved protections against workplace violence.
