Lasting Harms of Symptom Invalidation

We’ve discussed medical gaslighting before, most recently among women with vulvovaginal disorders. “Symptom invalidation” is a similar phenomenon that takes away any sense of intention on the part of well-meaning providers. Recent research has found that symptom invalidation can have lasting harms on patients’ self-image and mental health, particularly with difficult-to-diagnosis conditions, like rheumatology ones. Are You Making Social Media Mistakes?

Almost every one is on social media now, including nurses. However, you want to be careful when creating, posting, and sharing content as social media missteps can get you fired—or worse, cause you to lose your license. 

Here are three social media mistakes to avoid as a nurse: 

1. Employer Professional Conduct Policy Violations. These policies often address topics such as “professionalism”, which can be a catch-all term for conduct that an employer doesn’t agree with. Be familiar with your employer’s policies before posting. 

2. HIPAA Violations. Avoid posting protected health information (PHI). You may think you know what PHI is, but is it worth it if you don't? 

3. Share Credible Information. Misinformation is rampant online. It is important to only share accurate content. Check sources and confirm information before posting. 

It can be easy to make a social media mistake, but even harder to come back from one!
