Catch It Sooner |
Screening for gestational diabetes occurs between 24-28 weeks gestation, but identifying it sooner means earlier management. A recent randomized controlled trial showed that identifying and treating GDM sooner reduced the risk of complications, including preterm birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, and respiratory distress. And a new series at The Lancet suggests somewhere between 30-70% of all GDM cases can be detected by gestational week 20.

Largest Oregon Strike |
The strike at the Oregon Nurses Association that we mentioned two weeks ago has concludedβa three-day strike described as the largest of its kind in the stateβs history. More than 3,000 nurses demonstrated at six hospitals demanding safe staffing levels, affordable health care, increased paid time off, and market-level wages. The most important of these issues, one nurse told a local news station, is improved patient-to-nurse
ratios. Providence Portland nurses were not involved after settling their contract last June.

Telehealth Settling Down |
Telehealth was the only option for millions of Americans needing healthcare visits during the pandemic, but its use has been falling since. The proportion of American adults who used telehealth fell from 37% in 2021 to 30% in 2022, according to a recent report from the National Center for Health Statistics. But the shift hasnβt been equal: use has dropped most among people over 65, and the biggest users are women, urban dwellers, and college degree holders.

Money Moves For Moms |
Motherβs Day may be over, but we havenβt forgotten you, moms! To illustrate strong money moves for moms, letβs look at Nurse Margaret, who focuses on her children's future with two smart financial moves: opening 529 College Savings Plans and custodial accounts.
529 College Savings: Margaret understands the importance of education, so she invests in 529 plans for her kids. These tax-advantaged accounts will help cover future educational expenses, ensuring her children's academic pursuits are well-funded.
Custodial Accounts: Margaret also sets up custodial accounts under the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA). These accounts allow her to save money that her children can use for any purpose, not just education, providing financial support as they grow.
Nurse Margaret is planting seeds for her children's success, ensuring they have the resources they need for education and beyond. Margaret knows there are various ways to save for her children's future. However, she understands that the most crucial step is to start.
