Time’s 2024 Kid of the Year

Fifteen-year-old Heman Bekele from Virginia has been named Time’s 2024 Kid of the Year for inventing a soap that could treat and prevent skin cancer. NPR spoke with him last year when he won the grand prize for his soap, which uses lipid nanoparticles to deliver cancer-fighting drugs, at the 2023 3M Young Scientist’s Challenge. Check out the interview to learn about his inspirations, how he began his innovative research, and what his future holds.

Sugar Vs. Sugar Substitutes

We know that excessive sugar is harmful, contributing to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, but what about sugar substitutes? While these alternatives—which include artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, and other low-calorie alternatives—generally offer fewer calories than sugar, their health impacts are complex. Some research indicates they may aid in weight loss and have less impact on blood sugar levels than sugar, but they can cause digestive issues and potentially increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Learn more here.

Where Have All the Pancreases Gone?

Did you know that thousands of pancreases donated between 2021 and 2023 remain unaccounted for, despite being labeled for islet cell research from Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs)? Past investigations suggested that OPOs were under-using organs from deceased donors by the tens of thousands to increase their profits. An executive order that went into effect in 2021 sought to improve accountability but created a loophole related to pancreas recovery for islet cell research. The Senate Finance Committee is investigating and pushing for stricter regulations.
