Strike in the Empire State |
Fed up with below-market pay and frequent understaffing, nurses at Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell, represented by the New York State Nurses Association, have voted to strike. They charge that the health system has been requesting them βto do more with lessβ and making changes that could affect patient care. They demand
better staffing ratios, with one nurse for every four patients, and better pay β a 12% increase this year and a 10% increase in 2025, which Northwell countered with 3% in 2025, 2025, and 4% in 2026.

A Concerning Database |
The PlastChem Project has compiled a groundbreaking database revealing over 16,000 chemicals in plastic products. Some 4,200 chemicals (>25%) are linked to significant health and environmental risks. Among many others, this includes chemicals that affect the reproductive system (phthalates), hormone regulation (bisphenols), and immunity and cancer (PFAS). These three types of
plastic chemicals and flame-retardant chemicals called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) rack up some $250 billion annually in health-related costs.

A Policy Change with the VA |
In response to lawsuits alleging discriminatory policies against LGBTQ+ veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs has announced a significant policy change, extending coverage for IVF treatments to qualifying veterans who are single or in same-sex marriages. It previously only covered IVF for married veterans with fertility issues related to their military service.
Similarly, the Defense Department revised its IVF policy for active-duty service members, allowing coverage for assisted reproductive technology for troops and their partners, including the use of donor eggs and sperm.

Should You Include Hidden Keywords on Your Resume? |
This is called white fonting. Itβs a practice where applicants add extra keywords to their resume and change the text color to white. The idea is that the hidden text will increase keyword density and help you get through ATS and land an interview. But what happens if you use it and get caught?Β
It is often viewed as a deceptive and unethical practice. If discovered, it could jeopardize your chances of employment with a company. Itβs simple to uncover, no matter what type of document you submit your resume as. All someone has to do is hit βselect all,β and all text will be revealed.
What should you do instead? Organically use keywords to describe your accomplishments and skills.Β
Need a resume that helps you stand out without using deceptive practices? Check out the Nurse Fern Resume Template.
