Chicago Nurses Strike

Safety, staffing, and better payβ€”these are the three main reasons that more than 1,000 nurses at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) went on strike Monday, just blocks away from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Nurses say they hope the proximity of the DNC will draw more attention to their week-long strike. They allege that hospital management has expanded their assignment requirements and won’t allow them to wear adequate PPE for COVID-19.

New Kind of Transplant

For women struggling with infertility, in-vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies are the next go-to after other treatments fail. But there’s a newer option slowly gaining more evidence: uterine transplants. A new study in JAMA reports that 14 of 20 attempted uterine transplants were successful and all 14 women gave birth to at least one living baby. Half the pregnancies had complicationsβ€”mostly hypertension, cervical insufficiency, and preterm laborβ€”but there were no birth defects.

At-Home STI Testing

The FDA has approved the first-ever at-home test for syphilis: the First To Know Syphilis Test from NOWDiagnostics. Public health experts hope that expanded access to testing with this over-the-counter product will help increase screening, especially for those reluctant to see their doctor about a possible exposure or anxious about the stigma of sexually transmitted infections. Despite declines in cases for decades, syphilis cases have surged 80% since 2018, including 3,755 cases of congenital syphilis.

The Importance of Good News in Trying Times

With so many negative headlines, good news can feel like a much-needed breath of fresh air. Not toxic positivity or ignoring real issues, but finding and sharing authentic stories of hope and progress.Β

Here’s why genuine good news is essential:

  • Boosts Mental Health: True stories of positive change can reduce stress and anxiety, providing a break from the negativity that often surrounds us.

  • Fosters Hope and Resilience: Stories of kindness and overcoming adversity remind us that progress is possible, even in tough times.Β

  • Connects Us: Sharing meaningful positive news helps build community and connection.Β

It's not about burying our heads in the sand, but celebrating the wins that inspire collective action. Plus, when we see better, we do better. Good news is a tool to fuel our efforts toward change, providing proof of what’s possible when we work together.

So instead of doom-scrolling, add a little good news to your daily routine! You’ll be happy you did. 🧡
