Whereβs Your PPE, Barbie? |
Barbie has done a lot in the six decades since her debut, but her medical and scientific work could be more professional and diverse, a BMJΒ Β study found. Indiana University researcher Katherine Klamer compared 92 Barbie and 65 non-Barbie dolls in medical and scientific careers. The non-barbies were more diverse in backgrounds and fields, and none of the Barbies fully met clinical and laboratory safety standards: none had gloves, few had masks, and many had loose hair and high heels.

To the TARDIS! |
Indeed, we need doctors working during the holidays. However, when Doctor Who works on Christmas Day, England and Wales have fewer deaths the following year, suggests a fun study in the BMJβs special Christmas issue that analyzed 60 years of Doctor Who episodes. Though indeed a coincidental finding, itβs true that helping people in times of need, as the Doctor and healthcare professionals do, saves lives. This year, the Doctor will fly his TARDIS again through space and time at Christmas.

Relax, the Coffee is Safe! |
According to a BMJΒ Β study, healthcare workers can rest easy knowing that making themselves a cup of joe at work does nothing to increase the likelihood of hospital-acquired infections. Researchers swabbed five parts of 25 different coffee makers in hospital break rooms and offices to analyze microbial growth. While they found plenty of bacteria, it was only the usual suspects living in our skin and gutβnone of the bugs the WHO lists as particular threats to human health.
