A Step Forward, Then Back Again |
According to National Nurses United, the CDCβs decision to shorten the recommended isolation period for people positive for Covid-19 is a step backward for public health. The national nursing union wrote a letter to the CDC director when the agency began considering the policy change, citing multiple studies supporting the 5-day recommendation. Once the CDC made the change official, the NNU condemned the decision, βwhich will mean more transmission, illness, hospitalizations, and cases of Long Covid.β

Not Fully Tested |
A considerable proportion of the medications prescribed to children are off-label because they simply havenβt been tested in pediatric populations. According to a feature at Undark, the two main
reasons are financial incentives for pharmaceutical companies and the logistics of running clinical trials for children. Even though off-label prescribing for kids is largely safe, researchers are working to change the status quo by running more clinical trials with children.

A Bill Worth Passing |
A bipartisan group of US legislators has reintroduced a bill to limit mandatory overtime for nurses. A summary of the Nurse Overtime and Patient Safety Act, first introduced in 2020, states it would prohibit healthcare facilities from requiring nurses to work longer than a scheduled shift, over 48 hours a week, and more than 12 consecutive hours in 24 hours, among other things. Over 40 organizations, including the American Nurses Association and National Nurses United, support the legislation.

Nursing & Finance Pioneers |
In Womenβs History Month, letβs honor three extraordinary nurses who revolutionized healthcare and financial empowerment.
Florence Nightingale: Nightingale was more than the mother of modern nursing; she was a financial visionary. She founded the first professional nursing school using her resources.Β
Mary Eliza Mahoney: As the first licensed African American nurse, Mahoney didnβt just break racial barriers; she tackled economic inequalities. Her advocacy for fair compensation and opportunities brought financial awareness to nursing.
Lillian Wald: Wald, the pioneer of public health nursing, understood the crucial link between health and financial stability. She ensured healthcare was accessible for all, highlighting the importance of financial planning in community health.
These trailblazing women combined nursing expertise with financial intelligence, teaching us that managing finances is as vital as managing health. Their stories encourage us to embrace financial empowerment as a key component of our nursing careers.
