HANDOFF

A Fantastic First Lady

While many people only knew Rosalynn Carter as the wife of Jimmy Carter, she had a tremendous impact on her own terms, blazing a path of acceptance and destigmatization of mental illness. Carter passed away on Nov. 19, but she left behind a legacy of mental health reform and awareness raising, including an annual symposium on mental health, a mental health program, and fellowships for reporting on mental health. See a brief video of her lifetime of work here

Congratulations, Carol!

With more than four decades of nursing under her belt, Carol Perry, RN, was recently honored with the Kansas State Nurses Association Hall of Fame award. As the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer of Stormont Vail Health, Perry has helped launch a hospitalist program, establish a PICU, build new ER and NICU facilities, and start total joint and spine center programs. Her staff has earned the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Hospital designation four times.

Primary Care Pains

It’s not just nurses that America is short of. Not enough new primary care doctors are joining the field to keep up with population growth, and that means even more of the primary care load is shifting to nurses, NPs, and PAs, according to an in-depth feature at Politico. Visits with PAs and NPs have already been rapidly increasing in the past decade, and growth in virtual care with nurses has taken some of the primary care patient load as well.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

The Eyes Have It

Many nurses first discovered their passion for healthcare through volunteering at local hospitals. Nursing students or others looking for a new and meaningful volunteer opportunity, consider the BeMyEyes app. BeMyEyes connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers through a live video chat. As a volunteer, you can provide visual assistance to help blind users with tasks like reading instructions, identifying objects, or navigating unfamiliar settings.

The app allows you to volunteer on your own schedule, dedicating as little as a few minutes per week. By lending your eyes, you can make a real difference in a blind person's daily life and independence. As nurses, we know how empowering it is to maintain autonomy. BeMyEyes is an impactful and flexible way to uniquely share our compassion and skills virtually.

Excitingly, BeMyEyes recently integrated an AI visual assistant tool called Be My AI to provide even faster assistance. The AI can guide users through tasks by generating descriptions of photos they submit. However, connecting with real volunteers is still available if needed.
