Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling Alarms Medical Leaders

Medical leaders arenβt happy with the US Supreme Court's decision to strike down affirmative action. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said the decision would make creating a diverse workforce of future health experts and workers more difficult. The Association of American Medical Colleges said the ruling ignores
long-established research showing the benefits of diversity on our collective health. And the American Medical Association said it would take us back some steps in the fight against health disparities.

Suicide Attempts Seven-Fold Higher in Transgender Community

A new study suggests that suicide attempts are at least seven times higher in the transgender community based on a cohort in Denmark, which calls itself βa very LGBT+ friendly country.β Suicide rates were 498 per 100,000 person-years for transgender people vs. 71 per 100,000 for cis-gendered people. Suicide mortality rates per 100,000 were 75 vs. 21, respectively. The study found that transgender individuals also had higher rates of non-suicide-related deaths and higher rates of all-cause mortality.

Tufts Medical Center Nurses Reach Contract Deal

|
The Massachusetts Nurses Association and Boston-based Tufts Medical Center have reached a contract deal covering 1,400 registered nurses and providing significant financial bonuses. Nurses will receive a 10% across-the-board pay increase in the first paycheck after contract ratification. They will also receive 2.5% increases in Feb. 2024 and Sept. 2024. Additionally, nurses who work 24 hours on the weekend will receive 36 hours of pay. And those who commit to working 48 hours per week for 12 weeks will receive a $3,000 incentive.
