Good Morning, Readers!

This month, we had the honor of hosting Nurses Night with the San Francisco Giants, where we participated in pregame interviews, hosted a networking event, recruited a nurse onto the field to sing the national anthem, AND recognized a Bay Area nurse for their achievements. Check out the recap video here. Where should we go next? Reply to this email and tell us your city of choice!

Heroism Honored

Air Force Lt. Col. Jayde Sharp’s job was supposed to be pretty straight-forward: treat basic maladies like sprains or heat exhaustion in the final days of the United States’s presence in Afghanistan. But when a suicide bomber set himself off a week after the Air Force nurse arrived, the job rapidly shifted. Sharp put himself at risk to help evacuate 38 civilians and service members. Sharp received the Bronze Star this week in honor of his extraordinary efforts.

West Nile Woes

Two decades after it was first discovered, West Nile virus has become a bigger threat in the U.S. due to climate change. The CDC reports 289 cases across 33 states this yearβ€”and now Anthony Fauci is one of them. Fauci spent nearly a week in the hospital with the virus and said he’s ”never been as sick in my life.” Learn more about the virus and how to protect yourself, including using insect repellent with DEET.

Get Your Free Tests!

It’s been a rough summer wave of COVID-19 this yearβ€”the largest in at least two years. In addition to the newest vaccines becoming available this month (though you might wait a few months if you just had it), the surge has prompted a new round of free COVID-19 tests that anyone in the U.S. can order online. Go to Covidtests.gov to stock up for the winter wave.

The number of years it’s been since anyone in Gaza has been paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus, as has now happened to a 10-month-old baby in the region. The U.N. has called for a temporary pause in warfare to conduct a vaccination campaign.

YOUR NEW THING STRATEGY WITH NEW THING NURSE

That Post Got You Fired?

Social media is where a lot of healthcare workers speak their minds. While everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions, you shouldn’t always post them. Once it’s posted, anyone can send it to your employer.Β

Time and time again, nurses and other healthcare professionals have lost their jobs and their licenses over social media posts.Β

For example, I recently saw significant content posted about an Algerian Olympic boxer, Imane Khelif. Khelif reportedly has differences in sex development (DSD). Posted content ranged from questioning her gender, reposting of misinformation, and outright discrimination based on assumptions made about a person’s possible health conditions.Β

Why this social media behavior is problematic for healthcare workers:

  • For nurses, posting discriminatory content goes against the ANA Code of Ethics

  • Posts like this can erode trust between communities and healthcare providers

  • Most employers’ professional conduct policies don’t allow it

  • Content like this can increase risk for HIPAA violations if anyone posting has ever been involved in a target’s care

Strategies to engage in social media professionally as a healthcare worker:

  • Be aware of guidance on navigating HIPAA and social mediaΒ Β

  • Follow best practices to ensure your professional brand on socials

  • Create separate personal and professional social media accountsΒ

  • Know your employer’s professional conduct and social media policies
