States Can Block Funding for Planned Parenthood |
In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court allowed South Carolina to block Planned Parenthood—which employs a range of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff around the country—from receiving Medicaid reimbursements for non-abortion services like cancer screenings. The case centered on whether Medicaid patients have the right to choose “any qualified and willing provider,” which the conservative majority rejected. Dissenting justices called it a civil rights issue that will disproportionately affect low-income Americans. The decision could have major implications for Planned Parenthood amid ongoing clinic closures and proposed federal funding cuts. |

Start Your Cooking Journey Now |
Want to cook but feel intimated or don’t know where to begin? A chef’s knife and cutting board, nonstick pan and baking sheets, silicone spatulas, and pantry staples like kosher salt and olive oil are enough to start having fun, rewarding experiences in the kitchen. Using proper knife skills, seasoning throughout cooking (not just at the end!), and tasting as you go are key habits to build. Show yourself compassion over gag-worthy dishes—learning from mistakes is part of the process of developing any new skill (but definitely avoid these mistakes). |

Get the Most Out of Your AC Unit |
A heatwave fueled by a “heat dome” has scorched the central and eastern US and marked the hottest day in over a decade. If you’re rushing out to buy an AC unit, remember that portable units are typically more expensive and less effective and energy efficient than window units. And unless absolutely necessary, avoid buying older or used units. To maintain your AC properly, clean the filters, check the coils, allow condensation to drain, and store it flat (not on its side) during winter. |

Mystery Diagnosis Minute |
Hey everyone! To round out June’s recognition of Alzheimer’s disease, brain health, and PTSD awareness months, today’s mystery diagnosis has to do with an atypical form of Alzheimer’s. Let’s get into it!
🧠 This type of Alzheimer’s begins in the brain’s visual cortex with mild changes in vision manifesting as the first symptom of the disease.
🧠 In the early stages, the patient often has trouble recognizing faces and what they see in pictures. Later, traditional symptoms of memory problems and confusion develop.
🧠 The visual symptoms usually begin when the patient is in their mid-50s and 60s and can be difficult to discern them from actual brain degeneration versus an optical complication.
