For most of our aches and pains following multiple 12-hour shifts, we reach for our NSAIDs for some relief. In the late 1800s, those who suffered from backaches, and even insomnia or a nagging cough, doctors prescribed something similar to morphine. What was it? Heroin! Because of
the high use rate, addiction rates soared as heroin was marketed as a “non-addictive substitute for morphine!” I’ll stick to Aleve and Delsym for my headaches and coughs.

Registered nurse Heather Fogg saw plenty of foot amputations while working in a hospital medical-surgical unit in Bangor, Maine. What she didn’t see was many local options for medically-based foot care that might have helped prevent some of those amputations. So she decided to do something about it.
Fogg earned a national foot care certification and opened Fundamental Foot Care, offering compassionate foot care for older Mainers. Soon, she’ll be training additional nurses in the specialty.

Barely a week after UK nurse Lucy Letby was sentenced to life in prison for murdering seven babies, a different UK nurse is being investigated by the National Health Service in connection with the sudden, unexpected deaths of three babies at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The 28-year-old nurse, whose name has not been released, was arrested on suspicion of poisoning the infants following an investigation that began after a baby died on May 19, 2022.

It’s well established that professional athletes who experience repeated blows to the head, such as football players, can develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a progressive brain disease that eventually kills its victims. A new study in JAMA Neurology reveals that even very young athletes can die from CTE. The study looked at the brains of 152 football, soccer, ice hockey, rugby, and wrestling athletes, all of whom died before they turned 30. Researchers found 41% of them had a brain injury.
