Fermented Food May Be Good for Mental Health |
Fermented foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kimchi, and miso, may help reduce anxiety and depression by supporting a healthy gut microbiome, which influences brain function and mood, a new study suggests. Specifically, the probiotics help regulate neurotransmitters, reduce inflammation, and modulate activity in the amygdala, a brain region involved in processing stress and
emotions. While the study (and others) show fermented foods can help stabilize mood, experts stress they arenβt a substitute for mental health treatment.
