Good Morning, Readers! |
One of today’s top beats discusses how five nursing leaders will be honored at the AAN’s Health Policy Conference this fall. Although I never get tired of hearing about nurses getting the attention they deserve, it is even more meaningful during an election year, especially considering there are only three nurses currently serving in Congress. Are you a nurse running for office? Tell me your story here.

A New Use for Heparin? |
The findings are still preliminary, but there’s exciting evidence from a new study that one of the most commonly used blood thinners in the world could help treat a surprising malady: cobra bites. Animal research has revealed that heparin helps stop cobra venom from killing tissues and cells. Between 81,410 to 137,880 deaths occur from the estimated 5.4 million snake bites that occur globally each year, but many cause limb damage, amputations and lesions that heparin may help prevent.

Not So Legal |
Several mushroom candies that are supposed to contain only legal psychedelic ingredients may not be lawful after all. A recent study in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report tested five brands of gummies sold at gas stations and smoke shops near
Charlottesville, Virginia. Their labels list them as containing Amanita muscaria and various other unnamed ingredients, but Diamond Shruumz, Wonderland Legal Psychedelics and Urban all had psilocin, a Schedule I drug, and Urb had psilocybin.
