The American Academy of Nursing has elected a new president: Debra Barksdale, dean and professor at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She has been involved with the ANA since 2012, including serving as a Board of Director member, during which she was the liaison to the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Committee and several Expert Panels. She also sat on the
review committee for the National Academy of Medicineβs Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence program.

The contract between the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions and the health system officially expired at 11:59 PM, PT on Saturday, setting the stage for the largest healthcare strike in US history with 75,000 people involved. Kaiser, which has workers at hundreds of hospitals and centers in California, Colorado, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, DC, said hospitals and emergency departments will stay open. The strike involves many non-clinician Kaiser Permanente staff, including nursing assistants, optometrists, technicians, pharmacists, genetic counselors, and more.
