What’s β€œNormal” Anyway?Β

98.6 degrees was first introduced in the 19th century, but recent research suggests body temperature is more personalized. A recent Stanford study found normal temperatures ranging from 97.3 to 98.2 degrees. Factors like circadian rhythms, age, and sex can influence readings, which is important considering that temperature plays a vital role in medical diagnoses and may aid in early illness detection. Taking your temperature in the morning and the evening for several days can give you a sense of your personal normal temperature range.

Wellness Chatbots

We mentioned before how the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare would continue to expand in 2024, and we’ve already got the first signs of this: wellness chatbots that offer therapist-like conversations and diagnostic features. The Washington Post reports that the shortage of mental health providers has led employers to turn to technology-driven solutions like Woebot, Twil, and Wysa. About a third of U.S. employers currently offer such solutions, with an additional 15% considering their inclusion in the near future.

Medicare for WegovyΒ

Despite their weight loss potential, new obesity drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound are out of the reach of millions of older Americans due to Medicare's current prohibition on covering such medications. With obesity rates increasing among older adults, a bipartisan coalition is advocating to change this policy, but the high cost of the drugs muddy the issue, with some research suggesting Medicare would go bankrupt if it covered the meds. Advocates argue that the current prohibition perpetuates health disparities and fails to recognize obesity as a disease.Β

Meet Debriefing the Front Lines (DTFL)Β

In March of 2020, while working as an Assistant Professor at Towson University, I began to receive calls from former students and colleagues in need of a safe space outside of their affiliated workplace to express emotion free of judgment.Β

I knew I had to act - 16 days after a global pandemic was declared, I began Debriefing the Front Lines, one consultation at a time.Β

I kept going, until alone was no longer enough.Β
