As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day today, Iβd like you all to pause and reflect on this poignant quote he spoke at the 1966 convention for the Medical Committee for Human Rights in Chicago:Β
βOf all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane.β
While we have made advancements, we still have a long way to go until the injustices in the American healthcare system are no longer unequal, shocking, or inhumane.Β
As nurses, I urge you all to stand up, make your voices heard, and fight for the rights and equality that all of our patients deserve. In order to do better, we must be better.

Unionized nurses at the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu have announced their plan to strike from January 21β28. The HawaiΚ»i Nurses Association nurses say their main concern is unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios, with wages and staff retention being other related issues at stake. The hospital says βpatients are not numbersβ and argues it
follows national staffing standards. It is offering RN wages that would be the second highest in the country, but the union says the five-year timescale is too long to wait.

It may come as a surprise that California and 17 other states lack a mandate for private insurance to cover pediatric hearing aids, which can cost more than $6,000 a pair. Grassroots efforts have influenced legislation in 32 states, but California's recent attempt was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom, citing concerns about increased state costs. Meanwhile, bills in New York and HawaiΚ»i have also died. Advocates argue for treating hearing aids for kids as essential health benefits.Β
