CA Health Workersβ Wage Increased |
Expected to benefit some 426,000 health workers, a new law in California will raise their minimum wage to $25 an hour, increasing their annual income by about $6,400. Its implementation has been delayed, but some employers, like those in San Bernardino County and the University of California health systems, are raising wages ahead of schedule. However, some workers in small practices and stand-alone nursing homes will be excluded from the law, causing discrepancies in wage increases across the sector.

Total Artificial Heart Implanted |
A critically ill 57-year-old man became the first person to receive a BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart. Serving as a bridge-to-transplant solution for severe heart conditions, this titanium heart works using magnetic levitation technology, minimizes blood trauma and mechanical wear, and can regulate blood flow up to 12 liters per minute. Eight days after receiving the device at the Texas Heart Institute, the man received a newly available donor heart in its stead and is recovering well.

UK Nurse Suicides |
Since 2018, at least 16 nurses committed suicideβsix in this past year aloneβwhile under investigation by the UKβs Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The NMC has faced criticism for its βtoxicβ culture, lengthy investigations, and processes that have reportedly left nurses accused of sexual assault and domestic violence free to work unchecked. The NMC expressed condolences and despite public pressure, NMC chair Sir David Warren has refused to step down, citing the need for stability. Recently, nurses and midwives protested against the NMCβs regulatory practices.

Hot Money TopicΒ this Week |
No Money in Maternity Care - Maternity wards are closing down across the US closing down even though America ranks the worst among rich nations in maternal mortality. Why is this? Simply answeredβ itβs not profitable, due to misaligned incentives in our healthcare system. As one OB/GYN in the article explains, βHow is it that we got paid
$1,000 for nine months of prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care, but one hour of a joint replacement gets paid $1,600?β.
