🩺 This disease is so rare, it only occurs in one in every one million people and is also known as “black urine disease”.
🩺 The black urine comes from the inability of the patient’s body to break down the amino acids, tyrosine and phenylalanine, which causes a buildup of homogentisic acid.
🩺 Urine, and other parts of the body, can take on a dark coloration as a result.

A New York Times investigation found that Bellevue Hospital's bariatric surgery program has prioritized quantity over patient safety. Financially motivated surgeons have been operating on unqualified
patients and cutting corners, including having anesthesiologists provide minimal pain medications so patients awake and depart the OR sooner. The hospital has also been performing elective surgeries on Rikers Island detainees who struggle to recover in prison conditions. Critics argue that the program's focus on volume jeopardizes patient well-being, while hospital officials accused the NYT of presenting an inaccurate portrayal.

At 23 years old, New Hampshire nurse Andy Hoang was training to specialize in cardiac care when she experienced cardiac arrest herself, a rarity in people under 30. So, instead of practicing on a mannequin, her colleagues at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center had to perform CPR on her. The experience has made Hoang cherish life even more, bringing her closer to her life-saving colleagues. Hoang has returned to work wearing a heart monitor patch for further analysis.

The long-awaited federal ban on menthol-flavored tobacco has been delayed, possibly till March. Health advocates allege the Biden Administration postponed the ban to avoid alienating Black voters, who disproportionately use menthol-flavored tobacco. The administration's public calendar shows a significant imbalance in meetings favoring tobacco industry groups over public health groups. Critics argue that a menthol ban could save hundreds of thousands of lives, emphasizing its impact on Black communities, the unique, addictive properties of menthol, and its effect on smoking initiation, dependence, and cessation rates.
