No More Waiting

A new law in Rhode Island ensures that nurse graduates can get straight to work without having to wait until their NCLEX results come in. As long as they become licensed within 90 days of starting work, they can immediately begin on-the-job training after they’ve taken the test, according to the bill that Gov. Daniel McKee signed into law on June 29. Even the state’s hospital association supported the law, aimed at easing the state’s nursing shortage.

Whatcha Reading?

Relaxing beach reads or whodunit podcasts are fun diversions, but sometimes you want a book or podcast with a bit of fascinating history or science. But with so many new ones out each year, how do you choose? Enter STAT’s summer reading list of 42 recommended books and podcasts on health and science. From Fauci’s memoir, to Shakespeare’s grief for his son’s plague-induced death, to the women who fought for equality in science, there’s something for everyone.

Official Twinkie Limits

The evidence on the harms and potential addictiveness of ultra-processed foods has been rapidly building for the past decade. From the British Heart Foundation to the American Medical Association, a growing number of medical organizations have attempted to spread awareness about their risks. But is it time to regulate ultra-processed foods the way cigarettes and prescription drugs are regulated? That’s what the FDA is exploring, though it will be years, perhaps decades, before such policies come to pass.

YOUR NEW THING STRATEGY WITH NEW THING NURSE

Digital Competency in Nursing

Digital competence is essential for working in healthcare. However, with the rapid pace of change, maintaining digital competency as a nurse can also be a moving target.

Stay on top of digital trends and topics:

  • Tech Tools - Nurses are increasingly working via remote technologies and telehealth platforms. Familiarity with these tools can strengthen your application for virtual work opportunities.

  • Data and Equity - Nurses must understand how health data works to promote health equity + be able to identify when biased data may be exacerbating inequities

  • Nurse Leaders’ Role in Digital Transformation - The American Organization of Nursing Leadership (AONL) just released this document to position leaders to collaborate and lead within health care and with industry counterparts.

Whether you’re looking at remote or in-person nursing roles, it is important to advertise your skills on your resume. List technology training and certifications in a section titled “Licensure, Certifications, & Trainings”.  Potential employers don’t know what you can do unless you tell them!
