Practitioners Unionize

Emergency department workers contracted by staffing agency TeamHealth to work at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit have voted to unionize.Β All 31 ballots counted (from 43 eligible voters) voted in favor of unionization. The Ascension ED physicians and nurses will join the Greater Detroit Association of Emergency Physicians, a union that serves full-time and regular part-time staff physicians, lead advanced practice clinicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Residents and fellows at Mass General BrighamΒ in Boston also recently voted to unionize, as did house staff at the University of Pennsylvania.

Kids Don’t Belong Here

There has been a longstanding issue in Florida in which health officials have been placing Medicaid-reliant children with complex health issues into nursing homes for care. The children require constant care, but once they’re placed in this setting, their parents struggle to get them out. U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks has now issued a rulingΒ  putting an end to this practice, saying that health officials violated children’s rights. Florida’s Medicaid-oversight organization, the Agency for Health Care Administration, says the judge doesn’t understand the law.Β

Sneaky Swaps

In 2020, nurse Donna Monticone was caught stealing vials of fentanyl used for fertility procedures at the Yale Fertility Center and replacing them with saline. Women who underwent egg retrieval procedures at the center would scream in pain in the procedure room or report pain to the clinic afterward. The center paid more than $300K after an audit found discrepancies in its inventory of controlled substances, including fentanyl, ketamine, and midazolam. Listen to The New York Times’ five-part podcast, β€œThe Retrievals,” to hear this fascinating tale.

Imagine an adequately staffed environment with tools, resources, and workflows all created or vetted by nurses, a community for nurses, financial health, and mental health for nurses. Just imagine! This kind of nursing environment is possible, and work is being put in daily by nurse entrepreneurs doing their part to support nurses in many different ways.Β

These are just a few of the many great things being built by nurses:

Here are a couple of articles that highlight nurse entrepreneurship benefits:

Together we can build a supportive community, improve financial and mental health, improve workflows and care delivery, decrease burnout, and so much more!
