One of our Next Gen advisors, Emily Miligrim (UPenn Nursing, Class of β€˜25), wrote an article entitled β€œ5 Tips For a Successful Semester from a Student Nurse.” Read it here.

I love meeting with our group of advisors because they keep us in the know with everything happening that is shaping the future generations of nursing.

Autonomy Denied

Advanced practice RNs in Wisconsin hoping to gain more autonomy in their work will likely get their hopes dashed soon. The Wisconsin Legislature passed a GOP-backed bill allowing APRNs to write prescriptions and treat patients independently without physician oversight. This move would help alleviate healthcare shortages in rural areas. But Democratic Gov. Tony Evers indicated he would veto the bill, expressing concerns about the required experience for the new licenses. Republicans rejected an amendment requiring APRNs to complete 3,840 hours of clinical training over two years.

Religious Trauma Disorder

LGBTQ individuals in the US experience religious trauma at disproportionate rates and in unique ways, enough that some mental health professionals advocate adding religious trauma to the DSM. Some one in three US adults have faced religious trauma, with another 1 in 5 currently suffering from significant religious trauma symptoms, including guilt, shame, and loss of trust and meaning in life. Though conversation therapy is at least partially banned for licensed mental health professionals in 27 states and Washington, DC, the laws don’t apply to religious leaders.Β

(Un)Covering Wegovy

In an unexpected turn, the North Carolina State Health Plan has voted to stop covering weight-loss drugs β€” including Wegovy β€” due to skyrocketing costs. The surge in coverage from 2,800 to nearly 25,000 people in a year led to a $100 million expense, comprising 10% of the plan's prescription drug spending. The decision, effective April 1, is considered the first of its kind among state health plans in the US. Unless a last-ditch deal arises, NC patients must bear the total cost β€” $16,000 without insurance coverage.Β

Journey to a Sober Life

As Dry January comes to a close, you may wonder what the next step is in living a healthier life more than one month out of the year.Β

Are you curious about sobriety from alcohol, marijuana, or pills, already sober, or wish to explore what sobriety means to you without rigid rules and labels? The intense pressure of being responsible for others is overwhelming. The stress is exacerbated by inadequate support and unsafe working conditions, increasing the likelihood of substance use.Β

The burden of the pandemic atop an already stress-laden environment only worsened preexisting compassion fatigue, cumulative caretaking trauma, and the feeling of being simultaneously overworked and undervalued. Many are also navigating personal trauma that our intense work as nurses has exacerbated. Alone is no longer enough.Β

The Light Ahead is a compassionate, stigma-free pathway for sober nurses or those who identify as sober curious.Β
