Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends! |
First and foremost, I want to say Happy CRNA Week to all of the nurse anesthetists and student nurse anesthetists out there! Your job isnβt easy, but you all make it look as smooth as a Glidescope going down a Mallampati I oropharynx!Β
Next, itβs time for another round of Mystery Diagnosis Monday! This one is all about blood.Β
🩸 For many patients, abnormal bleeding symptoms occur right after they are born as bleeding from their umbilical stump as the presenting symptom.Β
🩸 Bleeding can happen at random or even following an activity that generally wouldnβt cause someone to bleed, like a hard workout.Β
🩸 Additional symptoms include chronic nosebleeds, bleeding gums, bruising, and large collections of congealed blood.Β
Think you know the answer? Check to see if youβre right, here!

Nurse Advocate Passes |
Former nurse Claire M. Fagin, a trailblazing nursing advocate and the first woman to lead an Ivy League university (as interim president of the University of Pennsylvania), has died at age 97. Notable for challenging and changing the restrictive practice of limiting parental visits to hospitalized children in the 1960s, she transformed nursing education and tripled enrollment at UPenn. Beyond academia, Dr. Fagin advocated for nurses' professional respect and autonomy and emphasized the importance of the art of healing.

Plant Protein = Healthy Aging |
More than a quarter of people over 65 years have multiple chronic health conditions, from hypertension to diabetes to heart disease. If you want to avoid that and age healthily, you may benefit from turning to more plant-based protein, according to new Harvard-based Nursesβ Health Study research. The study found that women who got more protein from plant sources had a 46% higher likelihood of remaining healthy into old age. In contrast, those relying more on animal-based proteins faced a 6% lower likelihood of healthy aging.

Preparing for Disease X |
The next pandemic may be far from many peopleβs minds, but itβs a pressing issue for world leaders who have convened to plan for the hypothetical, pandemic-causing Disease X (X meaning βunexpectedβ). The World Health Organization added Disease X to its priority list in 2018, launching a global process in 2022 to update and prepare for potential deadly pathogens (which also include Covid-19, Ebola, and SARS, among others). This includes investments in vaccination and treatment research and considering factors related to science, public health, socioeconomics, and healthcare access.

THAT REMOTE LIFEΒ WITH NURSE FERN
|
Is Remote Nursing Sustainable? |
Here are some current trends weβre seeing in remote nursing jobs and remote work in general.
Itβs much more competitive to land a remote role. Itβs hard to find data on remote nursing jobs (we probably should have kept better stats at Nurse Fern!) but what we are seeing is that more nurses are looking for a break from bedside, without a large increase in remote job openings, which equals more competition for whatβs
available.Β
Now that βreturn to officeβ is possible on a large scale, many companies that had only been posting remote now have hybrid options available.Β
Due to supply and demand, Itβs taking longer to get noticed by employers.
Having a stand out resume, LinkedIn profile (yes, nurses are on there!), and keeping up to date on the industry and employers you want is key to success in the application process
