Massachusetts Nurse’s Neck Cut By Patient
|

|
A nurse at Heywood Hospital found herself in a life-threatening situation with a patient. A 76-year-old man from New Hampshire had been on hospice care, with six months to live, due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. When the nurse went to adjust the oxygen tube on the man’s
nose, he grabbed her by the neck and cut her near the carotid artery with a pocket knife. Thankfully, the slice did not puncture the artery.

Illinois Hospital Closing Partly Due to Ransomware Attack
|

In 2021, hackers attacked St. Margaret’s Health in Spring Valley, Illinois, with ransomware. The cyberattack prevented the hospital from submitting claims to insurers, Medicare, or Medicaid for months. The hospital fell into a financial downward spiral it couldn’t recover from and is now closing. It is reportedly the first healthcare facility in the country to close after a ransomware attack. St. Margaret’s Health owns one other facility in the nearby town of Peru, which also suspended operations in January.

Fungal Meningitis Outbreak Linked to Mexico Cosmetic Procedures

According to the CDC, two clinics in Mexico — River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas — are linkedto a current fungal meningitis outbreak in the US. Patients were potentially infected during cosmetic procedures requiring epidural anesthesia, including breast implants and liposuction. So far, two American patients have died, and over two dozen have been infected. The species behind the outbreak, Fusarium solani, is linked to a previous meningitis outbreak in Durango, Mexico, late last year.
