Play Tetris to Reduce Anxiety

Stressed about Election Day? Playing a bit of Tetris, or a similar logic-based game, may help. Research has shown Tetris can prevent PTSD symptoms and a study in September described an experiment done during the pandemic with healthcare workers who experienced at least two intrusive memoriesβ€”a key feature of PTSDβ€”in the past week. Playing Tetris for 20 minutes reduced intrusive memories by 80%. Other research has shown Tetris helps reduce anxiety, too.

Patient Safety Improving

While it’s not quite at the levels seen before the pandemic, patient safety in hospitals has significantly improved, according to a new study in Nursing Research. In 2022, the most recent year with complete data, all five indicators of patient safety improved: fall rates, central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia cases, and pressure injuries related to devices or immobility.

A Nurse’s Lucrative Side Hustle

When Megan Walsh, an endoscopy nurse, began feeling particularly overwhelmed in March 2021, she started making plant wall decor to help her relax. She also incorporated aromatherapy into her creations to help with the stress. Now, she’s pulling in more than $121,000 in sales at her Etsy store and her side hustle has enabled her to scale back her nursing schedule enough to feel better. Do you have a side hustle that’s helped you scale back and relax more? Share it with us.

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

It’s time for another Mystery Diagnosis Minute! Since November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, I thought I’d take you through some diagnosesβ€”some familiar, some notβ€”that can happen with our diabetic patients.

🤔 New research has shown that when a patient has been hyperglycemic for an extended period of time, this organ is negatively affected.

🤔 When this organ is damaged and there is a subsequent fat buildup, the patient’s blood sugar levels can increase dramatically.Β

🤔 There are increasing numbers of patients who have T2DM as well as disease within this organ.
