NCLEX Scores Matter
Massachusetts-based LabourΓ© College of Healthcare can remain in operation for a few more months after nearly being shut down. The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing voted to shut down the program in June after enrolled students failed to achieve an 80% first-time pass rate on the NCLEX exam. After LabourΓ© appealed, the MA Department of Health decided to stay the ruling until the boardβs October 11th, 2023 meeting. Still, the college must work to make corrections to its deficiencies and provide updates.

Expanding Assisted Death
Canada is expanding its criteria for medically assisted death to include patients with incurable conditions, including mental illnesses like anorexia. In 2016, the country legalized assisted death for people with terminal illnesses, and it expanded the law in 2021 to include people with incurableβbut not terminalβconditions. A little over 10,000
people died through medically assisted death in Canada in 2021, and more than 30,000 have undergone assisted death since 2016. It is only available for those covered by a Canadian healthcare program.

Data Breach Lawsuit
Last week we told you about HCA HealthCareβs recent data breach that could affect some 11 million patients across HCA hospitals or provider offices in 20 states. The data, which includes patientsβ names, contact information, addresses, and appointment information, was stolen from an external storage location. HCA is now facing a class action
lawsuit for failing to protect patient data and putting them at risk for identity, potentially for life. This suit comes from a similar class action lawsuit against Johns Hopkins Health System.
