Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Today’s questionable historical medical practice involves mercury- no, not the planet currently in retrograde, but the actual shiny silver element. In ancient times, it was commonly believed that mercury could prolong or even give someone eternal life if they ingested or inhaled it with a mixture of sulfur and arsenic. Even worse, it was commonly used to treat STDs in the Victorian era, often killing patients from kidney and liver damage caused by mercury poisoning. Yikes!

Be well,

MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

US Halts Green Card Applications for Nurses

A backlog in nurse applications for green cards has led the US to hit the pause button until the State Department catches up, according to Becker’s. The department will continue interviewing applicants and processing green card applications submitted through June 2022, but all applications after that date will be on hold since the available green cards for foreign nurses have nearly run out, according to Bloomberg Law

Though more green cards should become available in October this year, the current backlog means new immigrant nurses likely will not start arriving until 2025. It currently takes about ten months to process green card applications. It’s not just foreign nurses who are disappointed in the news. The American Association of International Healthcare Recruitment called the green card freeze a “catastrophic interruption of the stable flow of healthcare talent to the bedside” that comes when “hospitals struggle to staff bedsides in the pandemic’s wake.”

Retired Rochester RN Returns to Mentor Nurses

For at least one nurse in Rochester, New York, retirement wasn’t the end of her time spent working in a hospital. Though Gwen Williams retired in 2019 at age 67, she felt a calling back to the emergency room, where she has been mentoring fresh nursing graduates trying to find their footing during the pandemic. Williams told News10NBC that almost as soon as she had hung up her scrubs after four decades at Rochester General Hospital, she knew she wasn’t done.

Williams’ willingness to step up as a mentor couldn’t have come at a more important time. Not only were new grads thrust into working during the biggest pandemic in a century, but many of them had been in school during the pandemic as well, learning only through virtual classes and clinicals, so Williams’ support and guidance have been especially welcome and helpful.

How Could the US Have Responded Better to Covid?

Few would accuse the US of having risen to the challenge of SARS-CoV-2 when the novel foe invaded our lives in 2020. But, unfortunately, the response fell well short of what infectious disease and public health experts had hoped for and had recommended in the years leading up to it when they had been warned a major pandemic was only a matter of time.

The country’s “partisan politics” and its leaders’ inability or unwillingness to take “ownership of managing the crisis” left the nation “ill-prepared to cope with a dangerous biological foe,” according to a new book about the US response to Covid, Lessons from the Covid War: An Investigative Report. Read the conversation that STAT reporter Helen Branswell — the first US health reporter to report on a new coronavirus wreaking havoc in China in late 2019 — had with the book’s authors to learn some key lessons from the US failures.

How to Deal With Imposter Syndrome During Nursing Interviews

You have landed the interview for your dream job. The interview panel asks you about your greatest strengths, and you think, “I don’t have any strengths! I haven’t done anything!” Imposter syndrome strikes everyone at different times. We question our worth, our skills, and sometimes, our why.

If imposter syndrome attacks during interviews, try these tips from Lisa Bonsall, MSN, RN, CRNP

  • Recognize Your Expertise: Pause and think about what you do well. Consider making a list before your interview and reviewing it to prepare.

  • Try to Reframe Your Thinking: Try to think, “I have strengths. I know how to ______.” Positive self-talk can help you better manage stress.

  • Remember That No One is Perfect: Even if you stumble, it is just one question in one interview. There will be more opportunities to shine and advance your career.
