Licensure Reporting Changes

The Nurse Licensure Compact provides multistate nursing licenses to eligible nurses, allowing them to practice in most states in person or via telehealth without needing a state-specific license. Washington state joins 40 other states that are part of the compact and will change its licensure reporting requirements on July 24th. When a hospital in the state hires a nurse with a multistate license, it has to report the hiring to the state’s board of nursing within 30 days.

Safe Staffing Solutions

The American Nursing Association released a new statement stressing the importance of creating standards for safe staffing across the country, including minimum nurse-to-patient ratios. A national workforce survey from the American Nurses Foundation found that a third of nurses prioritize patient care over their health by working far beyond their scheduled shifts. The ANA also highlights the need to address “burnout, workplace violence, mandatory overtime, and barriers to full practice authority.”

The Temporary Replacement

An Austin-based nurse is receiving intense backlash online for posting a TikTok video about what it’s like to be a strike nurse. Mireya Bustamante, who works for St. Louis-based Ascension, explains in the video that strike contracts have a quick turnaround and that, similar to travel nursing, the work requires adaptability and flexibility. Hundreds of commenters condemned the video, claiming she’s hurting the nursing profession and is “bragging about being a scab.” Bustamante responded to the backlash by explaining that there’s nothing wrong with working to pay your bills.
