Everyday We’re Hustlin'!

In partnership with connectRN, our new survey reveals what the modern nurse looks like: non-stop hustlers. We surveyed 1,300 nurses and found that more than half have side hustles outside nursing. Nearly half of the new nurses plan on transitioning their side hustle to their full-time job, and 80% want to start their own business. The top five factors most important to the new nurse include mental health, time with family and friends, work/life balance, physical health, and work excellence.

Pet All The Doggos

Are you feeling down and needing a little emotional boost? According to NPR, spending just five to 20 minutes with your favorite pooch will drop your cortisol levels and pop your oxytocin levels. This effect is more pronounced if you actually pet the dog. What’s more: the interaction will similarly spike the dog’s oxytocin levels, making it a win-win situation for all involved. Other research suggests canine interactions can improve executive functioning for up to six months!

Fewer Nurses = More Deaths

Chicago’s “safety-net” facility, Loretto Hospital, has been cited in the death of a patient whose life may have been saved if Loretto had sufficient emergency department staff. In February, the patient walked into the emergency department alone and filled out a complaint form noting “cardiac emergencies.” No staff was around, and the patient entered the bathroom near the triage nurse’s door. After reviewing the form, a triage nurse didn’t look for the patient, and a safety officer later found the patient unconscious. The patient died the next day.

Can New Grads Work Remotely?

Why does it feel like a taboo subject when a new grad nurse wants to pursue a non-traditional nursing role? Nursing “skills” reach far beyond IV insertions and med passes. While clinical experience is necessary for many remote and non-traditional roles, there are instances where a new grad can be successful without prior bedside experience. On the other hand, without clinical experience, you may face mental stress from time-sensitive metrics or needing to frequently ask for assistance from colleagues. 

If you don’t feel ready to work remotely yet, consider other non-traditional nursing paths:

• Clinic nursing

• Home health

• School nursing

• Mobile infusions

• Entrepreneurship

• Health coaching

• Nurse writing

Never be afraid to change the formula, and build a career you love, no matter how non-traditional.
