Good Morning, Readers,

One of today’s handoff stories discusses the CDC’s removal of many informational pages from its website. Luckily, some of these resources are still available via other channels.

If you are in need of vaccine information sheets or vaccination schedules for yourself, your family, or your patients, please visit Immunize.org. You can also ask your healthcare provider for additional copies of any informational sheets you need.

Partnership to Improve Nurse Training

A new partnership in the Philippines aims to improve Filipino nurses training with a state-of-the-art virtual reality program. More than 150,000 Filipino nurses have immigrated to the U.S. since the 1960s, making up a third of today’s foreign nursing workforce and 4% of all U.S. nurses. The VR simulation platform UbiSim, from Labster, announced a 3-year partnership with the Philippines training center Healthcare Technology Institute. The collaboration will support more than 26,000 nursing students a year.

More L&D Nurses, Fewer Cesareans

Staffing labor and delivery units adequately with nurses was associated with lower cesarean birth rates, according to a new study in Nursing Outlook. Nearly a third of all U.S. births are cesarean, and though the procedure can be life-saving, federal goals aim to decrease low-risk pregnancies resulting in cesarean deliveries to 23.6% by 2030. The new study found nurse staffing to predict a lower rate of cesarean deliveries and higher rate of vaginal births after cesarean (VBACs).

Confusion at CDC

Healthcare workers are concerned after officials removed over 1,000 pages from the CDC website Friday. The agency was reportedly attempting to comply with an executive order to remove all pages and data related to diversity and gender β€œideology,” but missing pages also include those related to vaccines, long Covid, youth behavior, HIV, STI guidelines, and more. Some have been restored as advisors demand answers from leadership. CDC researchers meanwhile remain confused over a separate order to pause all research containing certain β€œforbidden terms.”

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

Hey everyone! Thanks to Valentine’s Day, we already know that February is the month that’s most associated with love. But did you know that February is also American Heart Month? (Coincidence? Nah.)Β

This month, our Mystery Diagnosis Minutes are going to be all about the heart and some of the craziest diagnoses that affect the ticker. So let’s get into it!

🫀 This cardiac disorder’s name originates from Japan and literally translates into β€œpot for trapping octopus.” It is also known as β€œbroken heart syndrome.”

🫀 The symptoms of this disorder usually follow a very stressful event and make the patient feel as if they’re having a heart attack.

🫀 The two characteristic symptoms of this disorder are anginal pain and dyspnea, but arrhythmias and hypotension can also be present.
