|
The entire West Coast of the US now has laws establishing safe nurse-to-patient ratios! Two decades ago, California became the first state in the US to mandate nurse staffing ratios. On April 20, 2023, Washington jumped on board when Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law measures that require hospitals to
create staffing committees and keep assigned nurse-to-patient ratios at no less than 80% compliance. Now, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek signed a law requiring staffing committees for nurses and professional, technical, and service staff.

Fighting Medical Misinformation
|
YouTube is taking major steps to ensure accurate medical information is disseminated on the platform. YouTube says it is streamlining its existing medical misinformation guidelines to fall under three categories — Prevention, Treatment, and Denial — and applying it to medical information that contradicts the World Health Organization. The platform
is especially interested in countering cancer misinformation and will begin removing content that promotes harmful or ineffective treatments or steers people away from seeking professional treatment. It’s also collaborating with Mayo Clinic to create “informative cancer-related videos.”

The Impact of Addition
|
About three-in-ten people (29%) of people in the US have been or have someone in their family who has been addicted to prescription or illicit opioids (heroin), according to a new KFF poll. Opioid addiction has been tough on rural
communities (42%) and White adults (39%). The survey also revealed that two-thirds of people (66%) report having been or have a family member addicted to alcohol or drugs, was houseless due to the addiction, or experienced drug overdose resulting in ER visits, hospitalization, or death.
