Rumors Are Just That…Rumors

Two new Covid-19 variants — EG.5 and BA.2.86 — have recently been spreading worldwide. Because of this, airport employees and travelers will be required to wear masks again by mid-September and mid-October, respectively, with lockdowns coming by December, according to information circulating online. But the Associated Press found these claims utterly false after speaking with the TSA and the CDC. The claim, unsurprisingly, originated from an episode of “The Alex Jones Show,” a consistent source of conspiracy theories.

Votes To Strike 

From now through mid-September, the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions will hold a strike authorization vote. The Coalition represents 95% of workers at Kaiser facilities in California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, DC, Hawaiʻi, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington. This means that as early as October 1, some 85,000 healthcare workers could go on strike, representing the largest strike in US history. Union leaders call for better staffing, pay differentials for evening and night shifts, and remote work stability.

Payroll Problems

An anonymous nurse identified as “Dee” says that nurses in the Eastern Connecticut Health Network are dealing with significant payroll issues following a ransomware attack on the network’s parent company, Prospect Medical Holdings. Dee claims there’s no way to track hours properly, so nurses are being paid the same amount as their last check before the attack—despite extra hours and shifts. If true, this means that employees who only worked a few hours the week of the attack or those affected by wage garnishments are still being paid a tiny fraction of what they should.

How To Resign 

Breaking up is hard, including bidding farewell to your bedside nursing job. So, how do you plan your resignation? Here are nine tips:

1. Find the resignation section in your employee handbook to start planning the details.

2. Notify your employer in writing.

3. Consider doing an HR exit interview.

4. Be a willing participant in training others and transferring your work. 

5. Clean your workspace with pride. 

6. Check your pay stubs to ensure accounting didn’t make any errors or forget your PTO payout.

7. Give HR updated personal information for next year’s taxes. 

8. Get your work bestie’s contact information in case you need another reference in the future.

9. Add this job to a working document of “Previous Jobs” that lists the job title, company address, supervisor name, and contact information for easier job applications in the future.
