A Trailblazing Nurse |
Only about 5.4% of RNs in the U.S. are Hispanic, yet they have played an important role in the profession’s history. During this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll introduce you to some of them. Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, for example, founded the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) in 1975 after seeing how few Latina nurses were working in academia, research, or public policy. Arriving in San Antonio, Texas from Panama in 1945, she supported opportunities for Hispanic nurses until her death in 2010.

A little over a week ago, the first U.S. case of bird flu occurred in a Missouri resident who had no contact with infected animals or poultry. Though it’s the nation’s fourteenth H5 flu infection, all
the previous cases have been in poultry or dairy workers. So how did they get it? No one knows. The mystery has stumped public health officials, especially when Missouri isn’t even one of the states experiencing an outbreak in dairy cows.

As AI continues to grow in healthcare, California has proposed three significant bills—AB-3030, SB-942, and SB-1047—currently awaiting Governor Newsom’s decision.
AB-3030 would require providers to disclose when AI is used in patient care, while SB-942 focuses on ensuring transparency around AI-generated content. SB-1047 seeks to establish safety measures for AI technologies in healthcare. These regulations are designed to keep patients informed and ensure AI is used responsibly.
Some express concerns that too many regulations could slow down AI’s potential to improve efficiency in care delivery. As nurses, I think it's essential to consider how these changes may affect our day-to-day interactions with patients.
