Toss Your Cooking Utensils |
Black plastic kitchen utensils may contain harmful flame retardants, often from recycled e-waste, which can leach into cooking oil when heated and pose health risks like cancer, thyroid
disease, and hormone disruption. Recycling facilities struggle to process black plastic, leading manufacturers to rely on unregulated e-waste sources. Studies show high levels of flame retardants in black plastic utensils, food containers (including sushi trays), and toys. Instead of using black plastic, cook with utensils made from materials like steel or silicone to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Countryβs First COVID-19 Vaccine Ban |
Southwest District Health in Idaho, which serves six counties, is now barred from providing COVID-19 vaccines following a narrow board vote, marking a first in the U.S. A plea from Southwestβs medical director on the vaccineβs importance wasnβt enough to overcome public opposition and misinformation. At the next board meeting, the chairman plans to push for limited vaccine access, especially for high-risk patients like the unhoused and those in long-term care who rely on the department for vaccines.

Nurses Protest New Virtual Care Model |
Providence Alaska Medical Centerβs new virtual nursing model, launched to address a registered nurse shortage, has raised safety concerns among nurses who argue it increases bedside nursesβ workloads by raising patient-to-nurse ratios. The model assigns virtual nurses to handle non-direct care tasks alongside bedside nurses and nursing assistants. While Providence
sees this βco-caringβ approach as a way to meet Alaskaβs projected nursing shortfall, nurses fear it could lead to burnout and compromised patient care, prompting protests and an unfair labor complaint.

THAT REMOTE LIFE WITH NURSE FERN |
Remote Virtual Nursing |
Though nursing will always require a human touch and a clinical eye, thereβs no shortage of administrative and computer tasks required of the bedside nurse. With the innovation of virtual nursing, these cumbersome jobs are outsourced. This takes the burden off of bedside nurses, hopefully allowing them to spend more time assessing and listening to patients.Β
Roles in virtual nursing include:
Working from home or working in a command center
Working for a virtual nurse staffing company, your local hospital system, a clinic, or a homeless shelter
Completing patient admissions, discharges, and other administrative tasks
Performing virtual visits and monitoring patient conditions
Patient education and teaching
