Five cases of HIV were linked to an unlicensed New Mexico spa that used unsanitary practices for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) microneedling procedures, the CDC reported at a conference in March and then last week in MMWR. PRP microneedling, or “vampire facials,” was popularized by Kim Kardashian in 2013. Two of the HIV cases were diagnosed before receiving the facials, and three were diagnosed after, but tests revealed all five were closely linked genetically.

Nurses working in correctional facilities in Multnomah County, Oregon, have demanded that two managers be fired
for gross mismanagement. The nurses sent letters through their union, the Oregon Nurses Association, to county commissioners claiming the mismanagement and unsafe working conditions left them “left them overworked, underpaid and in a hostile work environment, undermining the health of their incarcerated patients,” a local news station reported. The nurses allege that one supervisor is often absent, and the other ignores staff concerns.

Hospital Infections Still High |
Antibiotic-resistant hospital infections in the US are still higher than
pre-pandemic levels, found a study presented at a European infectious disease conference. Another study at the conference found similar results globally, potentially due to overuse of antibiotics during the pandemic, the World Health Organization says. The US study, based on data from 120 hospitals from 2018-2022, found infections surged by 32% at the pandemic’s peak and still haven’t returned to baseline.
