Good Morning, Nurses!

Today we have a tidbit about just how many nurses want to try traveling, and their reasons behind this desire. When I decided to do the travel nurse thing, my top reasons included the money and an opportunity to see more of the country. If you traveled, what were your reasons? Tell me here!

Ready for Juneteenth?

Tomorrow we’ll be bringing you stories related to Juneteenth, which celebrates the day that news of slavery’s abolishment finally reached Texas two years after Lincoln’s proclamation. In preparation for the holiday, check out this feature from last year’s Juneteenth on four Black nurses who shared their experiences in nursing, from racism they’ve experienced, to how they manage their mental health, to what healthcare workers can do to promote social justice.

More Preemie Inspiration

We told you last week about a nurse who began working at the NICU where nurses cared for her after her premature birth and inspired her to become a nurse. That inspiration may be a trend: 23-year-old Jay Larsen was also born extremely premature β€” 24.5 weeks β€” and was also inspired to become a nurse… and also now works in the same NICU at HSHS St. Vincent’s Children’s Hospital, where she spent her first months!

β€œShocking Ineptitude”

As H5N1 bird flu continues to spread through dairy cattle herds, a major global health leader criticized the US response to the outbreak and how little US agencies have learned from COVID. Seth Berkley, former head of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, said it was β€œshocking to watch the ineptitude” of US management of the outbreak. Two new USDA reports reveal why it’s challenging to contain the spread. Berkley said the H5N1 outbreak β€œkeeps me up at night.”

TECH TUESDAYΒ WITH NURSE MANNY

Eyebot vs Optometrist

I've always found it interesting that optometrists, while relying on tools, ultimately use their own eyes to assess the vision and health of their patients. This human element in eye care is now complemented by technology like Eyebot. A Boston-based startup, Eyebot offers self-serve kiosks that deliver accurate eye prescriptions in just 90 seconds using artificial intelligence and computer vision. Users stand in front of the kiosk, which automatically detects their eyes using infrared light measurements. The technology can identify refractive errors and screen for over 20 other eye conditions. This innovation enhances convenience for patients and can help identify the many eye health conditions affecting Americans. To learn more about Eyebot, read about it here.
