Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

Hello, Readers!

HAPPY NURSES WEEK to all my fellow nurses braving the good storm that is healthcare. This year, it was an honor to shift focus from receiving the pizza party to planning something meaningful that commemorates every nurse for what they deserve. We have teamed up with Guardian Medical Direction, an organization that helps nurses start their own businesses by offering consultation on facilitating complicated regulatory requirements associated with being an owner. So, if you are a nurse with a great business idea who doesn’t know where to start, this week, we are giving ten nurses a free consultation with the CEO of Guardian, Chris Seitz! He’ll walk you through your next steps to achieving your dream (enter to win below!)

Healthcare is complicated. But your next step in your career doesn’t have to be with the right community support 💜.

Stay safe. Be healthy. Be kind.

PS: Our friends at Guardian also gave three nurses $500 bonuses for Nurses Week. Stay tuned to hear their stories this week!

MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

Nurse Union Highlights Issues With “Home All Alone” Programs

Home All Alone” programs, such as those championed by Kaiser Permanente, allow hospitals to treat patients at home for conditions that require hospitalization for acute care. Supposedly, the programs increase patient comfort while reducing costs. But the California Nurses Association is sounding the alarm, arguing that such programs endanger patients and nurses’ jobs, and they are little more than “patient-dumping” schemes to increase corporate profits (a Trump Administration rule allows hospitals to still receive the full inpatient reimbursement rate). They are urging lawmakers to disallow such programs.

Kaiser says its Advanced Care at Home program has improved patient satisfaction and reduced healthcare-acquired conditions. But some nurses have reported that acutely ill patients are sent home with a watch that serves as a call button and a tablet set up in their treatment room at home. For nurses, their time is spent arranging for medication and care delivery.

Cincinnati’s Xavier University Settles $750K Suit with Students

During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Xavier University ceased in-person learning and moved its accelerated bachelor’s degree in nursing program online. As expected, however, the program’s laboratory work and clinical placements were canceled. The school had previously stressed the importance of real-life experience, telling applicants it’s “impossible to earn a BSN 100% online.” As a result, nearly 500 nursing students sued the school for subpar education, and Xavier has now agreed to settle the $750,000 suit.

A university spokesperson told the Cincinnati Enquirer: “Because the ABSN students were already enrolled in an online nursing program, the only in-person instruction they were not able to take advantage of was clinical instruction due to the worldwide pandemic.” The university also claims to be “proud” of the education it was able to offer students during that time.

Jefferson Health Hospital in PA to End Acute Care and Emergency Services

Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health is ending acute care, general surgery, and emergency services at its Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park. Instead, these services are being “transitioned” to Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and Jefferson Abington Hospital. Jefferson is also expanding its inpatient physical rehabilitation services at Elkins Park’s MossRehab, which is recognized as one of “America’s Best” rehabilitation facilities by the U.S. News & World Report.

Jefferson explains that physical rehabilitation services are expected to grow significantly over the next decade. Its services shakeup allows Jefferson to centralize its rehabilitation care. Additionally, Jefferson Abington Hospital will be able to add 23 general medical beds, which will help “decompress” the emergency department. The transition is expected to affect 115 of the 1,000 employees at the hospital. “Jefferson Health is committed to minimizing the impact on employees, and our goal is to retain all employees affected by these changes,” Jefferson told Becker’s Hospital Review.
