The Offer Wasn’t Enough
|
The Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 40, a union representing some 270 nurses and radiology technologists, plans to hold a three day strike at Ascension Providence Rochester on Sept. 11. Ascension says it offered a wage proposal with an average wage increase of more than 19% in the first year of the contract for RNs and radiology
technologists. But this increase would still put the hospital’s staff behind other Ascension hospitals and facilities in the area, the union said. The union has also filed complaints against Ascension for unlawful actions during negotiations.

It’ll Eat Your Flesh Off
|
The death tally from the “flesh-eating” bacteria Vibrio vulnificus is now up to six: two people in Connecticut, three in North Carolina, and one in New York. Infections from the bacteria are not exactly rare. Vibrio bacteria cause an estimated 80,000 illnesses — with 150 to 200 life-threatening infections being reported to the CDC — each year. However, it is rare for deaths to spike in the East Coast states rather than the usual Gulf states. The new infections were mainly contracted due to open wounds exposed to contaminated coastal waters and eating raw or undercooked seafood.

Caring for the Homeless
|
On any given night, hundreds of thousands of US residents may be experiencing homelessness and related barriers to receiving care, including poverty, poor mental health, and lack of trust in medical professionals. Nurse Journal has some tips for caring for these patients, including using a
holistic nursing and trauma-informed approach that addresses intertwining mental, physical, and social health problems. Establishing trust is also key, starting with actively listening to the patient and understanding how they care for themselves.
