Toxic-Free Medical Devices |
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the Toxic-Free Medical Devices Act, banning the use of the harmful chemical DEHP in IV bags and tubing by 2030 and 2035, respectively. DEHP, nationally banned from toys in 2008, has been linked to breast, liver, lung, and testicular cancers. Although the law applies to California, it could impact national standards. Several leading California health systems started using DEHP-free years ago and several national manufacturers already sell FDA-approved, DEHP-free IV bags.Β

Mucinex and Fertility |
Need to increase your fertility on the dime? Head to the pharmacy for Mucinex, so says the latest TikTok trend. The idea is that the expectorant, which thins mucus in air passages, could do the same for cervical mucus, allowing sperm easier access. While some users rave about the procreative success theyβve had with Mucinex, thereβs no scientific proof it works, making it
difficult for experts to recommend its use. But they do say Mucinex might help in rare cases, such as for those with cystic fibrosis.Β

Type 1 Diabetes Reversed |
A 25-year-old woman with Type 1 diabetes began producing insulin after receiving a transplant of reprogrammed stem cells from her own body. Transplanted into her abdominal muscles, the cells allowed her to stop insulin injections and maintain stable blood sugar levels for over a year. While groundbreaking, the technique is difficult to scale up and commercialize. But
similar trials using donor stem cells are also showing promising outcomes.

Mystery Diagnosis Minute |
Welcome to another round of the Mystery Diagnosis Minute! Iβm rounding out September with another topic Iβve been teaching my RN students in pediatrics class. (Thereβs your first clue!) Put your thinking caps on and maybe grab a snack, because this diagnosis can be hard to digest.Β
🤔 This disorder is characterized by the absence of ganglions in a segment of the bowel.Β
🤔 Because of this absence, the muscles within the bowel no longer contribute to peristalsisβso stool no longer moves freely.
🤔 Naturally, this back up of stool can cause constipation, intense pain, bacterial infections, or a complete bowel obstruction.Β
Think you know the answer? Click here to find out if youβre right!
