HANDOFF

Two Strikes, Two Avoided

There’s been lots of movement in nurse union negotiations lately. Nurses at University Medical Center in New Orleans held a one-day strike last Friday after months of negotiations failed. Then 4,000 miles west of there, the United Nurses and Health Care Employees of Hawaii announced plans for a three-day strike in November. Meanwhile, nurses at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital said they "won a historic union contract,” and nurses at McLaren Flint Hospital in Michigan just approved a four-year contract.

Two Covid Vaccine Doses for Some

The CDC issued a new recommendation that moderately or severely immunocompromised people and those 65 and older should get two doses of the Covid vaccine each year, six months apart. The decision is a response to the multiple challenges of managing Covid. It appears to have two surges each year, once in summer and again in winter, and the vaccine’s effectiveness may not last the full year, especially with its constantly evolving variants.

Increased Infant Mortality Since Dobbs

A new study investigated infant mortality trends after the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. They found a 7% increase in infant deaths and a 10% increase in those with congenital anomalies, but the increase wasn’t spread evenlyβ€”some months had spikes, but no months had lower-than-expected infant mortality. The findings match a June study showing a 13% increase in infant deaths in Texas after its abortion law went into effect, compared to 1.8% increase across the rest of the U.S.

MANAGER'S MEMO

Addressing Nurse Manager Turnover

Nurse managers are at the heart of ensuring smooth operations, keeping teams engaged, and driving patient satisfaction.Β

But let’s face itβ€”the turnover rate among nurse managers is concerning. Many of us are juggling heavy workloads, a wide scope of responsibilities, and often not getting the support we need. So, how do we make it work?

The key lies in building an environment where we feel empowered. Adequate resources, manageable staffing, and nurturing positive relationships with our supervisors are critical, and effective onboarding, peer support, and prioritizing work-life balance are just as important.Β

By focusing on individualized support and giving nurse managers more leadership opportunities, we can tackle burnout and boost job satisfaction. How is your organization helping to reduce stress and keep you in the game? Share your ideas with me here. Together, we can find ways to support each other and our staffβ€”and improve patient care.
