Removing Race Adjustments from Clinical Tools

The Regional Coalition to Eliminate Race-Based Medicine has removed race adjustments from clinical tools in lung, kidney, and OB-GYN care across member health systems. This initiative has already helped over 700 patients advance on the kidney transplant list, with 63 receiving transplants in 2023. Other projected impacts include diagnosing and treating Black and Asian patients with lung disease sooner and giving Black and Hispanic patients the same opportunity as others to have a vaginal birth after a previous C-section, among many other things.

Rethinking “Ugly” Hospital Gowns

Hospital gowns, designed for practicality, have long been criticized for being uncomfortable and dehumanizing, reducing patients to anonymous “sick people.” Though originally meant to provide easy access for medical care, they also reinforced a power dynamic that stripped patients of individuality. Recent awareness of the link between patient dignity, mental health, and recovery has led to redesign efforts, creating more functional and dignified garments that reflect a shift toward “person-centered” care.

The Best Sleeping Position

What’s the “healthiest” sleeping position? It’s the one that’s most comfortable and helps you fall and stay asleep, most commonly being side sleeping, though your preferred sleeping position depends on multiple factors. In terms of overall health effects, side and back sleeping are generally the best, but they can aggravate shoulder problems and acid reflux, respectively. Stomach sleeping can cause issues like back pain, but may be better for people with sleep apnea. Click here for specific sleeping position tips.
