The airport may be one of the last places you want to be when you’re feeling stressed, but some airports are looking to replace that anxiety with joy. As part of its animal therapy program, the Portland International Airport invites travelers for a “magical” interaction of happiness and tranquility with Beni the llama and Captain Jack the alpaca. These animals,
trained by Mountain Peaks Therapy, provide a unique experience with “carrot kisses,” neck hugs, and other gentle interactions. Other airports offer similar programs, the largest being Denver International Airport’s record-holding program.

Indefinite Illinois Nurse Strike |
Over 1,700 nurses at University of Illinois Health, represented by the Illinois Nurses Association, plan to begin an indefinite strike on Nov. 13 after failing to reach an agreement with the hospital despite multiple negotiation attempts. The nurses’ demands include better wages, reduced staff-to-patient ratios, extended paid parental leave, and contract protections. They are also
pushing for improved safety measures, citing concerns over workplace violence. This is not the first strike since their contract ended August 18.

Are ERs Failing Children? |
Over 80 percent of US emergency rooms lack full pediatric readiness and researchers estimate that enhancing pediatric preparedness could prevent over 25 percent of child deaths following ER visits. The improvements, costing less than $12 per child in the most underprepared states, include specialized equipment, protocols, and training tailored for pediatric care. While some hospitals have made strides independently, a lack of incentives keeps pediatric readiness low, especially in rural areas, where critically ill children face significantly higher mortality rates.

Trauma-informed communication is essential in the workplace because it fosters a supportive environment that acknowledges and respects individuals' experiences and cultivates trust.
Try these phrases and make them authentic to you!
Call out courage: “Thank you for trusting me and feeling it is a safe space to do so.”
Communicate courageously: “What am I missing?”
Character boosting: “This is a difficult situation and you’ve shown ____ in how you are handling things.”
Convey caring: “What would be most helpful to you right now?”
Check in: “I will check in on ____…” or “Is there anything else you would like me to know before we meet again?”
Follow up: “What has been the biggest challenge since the last time we met?” or “Has anything come up for you since the last time we met that you would like to share?”
By prioritizing trauma-informed communication, we pave the way for a more inclusive and empathetic workplace.
