$15K RN Stipends

Texas hospitals are projected to be short 12,572 nurses by the year 2032, so state officials are looking for ways to improve retention. One such way is a rural nurse retention initiative providing $15,000 stipends to rural nurses. Qualified nurses must work in a hospital or health system in counties with a population of 68,000 or less, and the institution must provide direct patient care and accept Medicare and Medicaid. Applications opened June 3 and close June 27.

Mpox Isn’t Gone

The US has made substantial progress in reducing mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) cases since the 2022 outbreak, but new cases are still occurring. A new report from the CDC reported on cases from 13 ER departments in the second half of 2023. Though only 3 cases — 1.5% of patients with an mpox-like rash — were identified, all three were unvaccinated and were gay or bisexual men who have sex with men, the demographic at highest risk. Experimental Sabbaticals

Sabbaticals are well integrated into academia, where professors take paid leave for a few months to do research or similar pursuits. But what would a sabbatical for nurses look like? Nationwide Children's is exploring exactly that concept, such as giving nurses in high-acuity units a couple weeks’ break in a lower-acuity unit. And they’re looking at other models, like school-year schedules and shared FTEs, as they track outcomes to see if sabbaticals help with burnout and stress.
