Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

☀️ Good Morning, Team TNB!

Financial planning courses aren’t part of our nursing school curriculum, although they would be beneficial. I would have loved to learn how to save for retirement and how much of my paycheck I take home after a 16-hour shift. Well, NurseWallet is trying to change that. They are the no-muss, no-fuss money app for nurses where you can connect your schedule and then know exactly how much you will take home after every shift! This includes shift differentials, taxes, and retirement! Check them out today!

Stay curious!

CMS Compliance Restored to WA Hospital Where Nurse Called 911

Last October, Kelsay Irby, an emergency department charge nurse at St. Michael Medical Center in Washington, called 911 to get help from the fire department. But it wasn’t to put out a fire or another such emergency. Instead, it was to get assistance with patient care at the overwhelmed facility operating with just 50% of its usual staff. An investigation found that the hospital was out of compliance with CMS regulations and at risk of losing funding. Nevertheless, the facility has regained CMS compliance in several areas related to health and safety.

The issues needing fixing were significant, ranging from a patient dying due to staffing issues to the facility lacking a standardized process to provide adequate staff to the hospital’s misuse of its seclusion and restraints.

Advanced Practice RN Faces Decades in Jail for Multiple Charges

Advanced practice RN Kelly McCallum has pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully distributing controlled substances and one count of healthcare fraud, according to the US Department of Justice. She faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each controlled substance count and ten years for the healthcare fraud count.

McCallum had sexual relationships with two patients from January 2017 until early 2021. She was their medical provider and prescribed them “controlled substances outside the usual course of professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose.” She also billed Medicare and Medicaid for examinations and other services she didn’t provide, receiving $16,234 for services from the agency.

The case is very similar to that of nurse practitioner Stefanie King, who also had sexual relations with patients, unlawfully prescribed them controlled substances, and engaged in Medicaid fraud.

FDA Updates Warnings for ADHD Meds

Citing concerns about the nonmedical use of stimulant drugs, the FDA is updating warnings for the medications prescribed for ADHD and other conditions, including Adderall, Ritalin, and Concerta. In addition, given that most current warnings are out of date, the boxed warning for the entire class of central nervous system stimulants will be getting standardized language to more clearly convey the dangers of using them — the potential for misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose, and death.

The FDA found that from 2006 to 2020, up to 80% of nonmedical stimulant use involved patients’ drugs given to friends and family. The warnings are intended to curb the sharing of drugs. The new labeling will also instruct healthcare providers to assess their patient’s risk for abuse before prescribing stimulants and include details about the physical symptoms of abuse and withdrawal from stimulants, among other things.

☕️ THE BREAK ROOM powered by

Crying at Work

Have you ever cried at work? If so, listen up! Maybe it is a difficult interaction with a patient, a coworker, or due to exhaustion, but we all know that when the tears start to well up, that hot feeling comes over your body, and you think, “Oh no!”

If it’s not the right time for tears, try these tips!

💧 Excuse yourself politely.

💧 Focus on an object; think about what it looks like, feels like, and where it belongs in the room. Even something in your scrub pocket or a hair elastic on your wrist can help and be subtle.

💧 Breathe, and say to yourself, “I am in control of my emotions.”

💧 Take an action, tap your feet, stand if you’re sitting, take off your stethoscope, and open the door; this will help interrupt the thought pattern.

💧 Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and look up.

What works for you to keep those tears from streaming? Share in the comments on IG!
